2004 Victorian Disc Golf Open at Whittlesea
report by Greg Sparksman Sept '04

Players of the 2004 Victorian Disc Golf Open at Whittlesea were greeted with a picturesque panorama of the Kinglake National Park which surrounds the course.

The event welcomed overseas players, Yorck Burneleit from Germany & Liron Atlas from Israel, and interstate players from Hobart, Brisbane & Canberra.

The weather was cool sunny with little winds after rain & strong winds earlier in the week. Competition day on Friday was Stuart Jones, the TD's 59th birthday. The players' long trek to the event was his best present he received!

The course is well maintained by club workers. It has some long, wide open fairways with several OB dangers, & tight difficult treed fairways requiring precision drives, approaches & putts. Most holes were well protected by trees & OB areas.

There was a three way leaders' tussle for most of the final nine holes. The second last hole was bogeyed by Tim Marchback from Brisbane, leaving Harvey Yarnall from Hobart & Ian Whitehead (Melbourne) as co-leaders. The last hole saw Ian's approach hit a tree, while Harvey's precise approach landed near the hole. Though out-driven on most holes by Tim & Ian, it was Harvey consistently precise approaches & putts which won the title for him.
